Length
The length of your mantel will be determined by how much of your fireplace you want shown at the ends of the mantel. You may choose to have your mantel overhang, full length, equidistant, or firebox length. See the Style Options section below for more information and examples.

Helpful Tip For Drywall Mounting
If your mantel is going to be installed onto drywall that will later have stone or brick installed around it, we recommend increasing the depth of your mantel to accommodate the area that will be obstructed by the stone/brick. Example: If you order a 6" deep mantel and your stone/brick protrudes from the wall by 2", your usuable mantel depth will only be 4".
Style Options
Overhang Mantel
An overhang mantel is one that extends or hangs past the face of your fireplace or the stone/brick that sits behind it.
Full Length Mantel
A full length mantel extends fully from one side of the fireplace face to the other. This type of mantel is common when your fireplace is surrounded by other architectural elements, such as built-in cabinets or bookshelves. The overall look is one that is more dominant and commanding.
Equidistant Mantel
An equidistant mantel is one that is centered inside the face of the fireplace and has an equal and proportional area of stone/brick/tile around the sides of it.
There is no set rule for how much space to leave at the sides of your mantel. It all comes down to your personal style and preference for the space the mantel will occupy. Your main consideration should be to create a mantel that balances the overall look of your fireplace and not overwhelm it.
Firebox Length Mantel
A mantel that is the same length as the firebox below it will give a more minimal and streamlined look and feel to your fireplace. This type of mantel is most commonly seen in rooms with smaller spaces or with another focal point besides the fireplace, such as a bay of windows..
Mounting to Stone, Brick, or Other Masonry Wall
If your mantel will be mounted to a fireplace that has stone, brick, or another masonry material already on it, your mantel will more than likely require notching. Once installed, your mantel will sit on top of the stone/brick/masonry material. Please see our Mantel Installation Guidelines for additional mounting information.
Mounting to Stone, Brick, or Other Masonry Material That Will Be Laid at a Future Date
If your mantel will be mounted to a fireplace where you will install stone, brick, or another masonry material at a future time, we recommend using steel straps to mount your mantel. Once it is mounted, the stone/brick/masonry material will be installed around it, and your mantel will rest inside of the stone/brick/masonry material. Please see our Mantel Installation Guidelines for additional mounting information.
